Drives to ban gay adoption heat up in 16 states Wow. Here's a BRAND. NEW. IDEA. Let's get yet ANOTHER ballot initiative on the docket that would take away yet ANOTHER right from GLBT people so that states can 1) uphold "family values" (including, apparently, leaving more children in need of adoptive homes because girls who love girls and boys who love boys are automatically unfit parents) and 2) get more homophobes to the ballot box to vote with their holier-than-thou values and the candidates who represent those values. Ahem. Next week, two people (in two different families) who I care about very much will become the legal parents of the children they have parented since their children's birth. They are able to do this because they're lucky enough to live in a state that understands that a parent being legally able to make decisions for his or her child is in the best interest of the child. Another friend, who is parenting her child, the biological child of her partner, in a state that is considering a ballot initiative to ban gay adoption, worries every day that something will happen to her son and she will have no legal recourse and no right to make decisions about his welfare. Please go answer this question: What do you think of gay adoption? It's just an opinion poll, but it matters. Keep your eye on this issue. We're going to be hearing about it for a long, long time.
-------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Heartened COMMENT-DATE:2:09 PM COMMENT-BODY:Here's a thought - let's pass a law which states that in order to be permitted to vote in favor of a ban on GLBT adoptions, you must first adopt a special needs child from foster care.
Otherwise, your vote doesn't count.

Put your money where your mouths (and votes) are, conservatives. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger M. COMMENT-DATE:2:15 PM COMMENT-BODY:Heartened - you are great. Thank you - I needed that! -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Anonymous Anonymous COMMENT-DATE:7:15 PM COMMENT-BODY:Do they sit around and think of ways to be mean ? Truly how much energy does it take to come up with this stuff that has no effect on their lives, but has a ton of effect of the daily live of so many families across the nation. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Anonymous Anonymous COMMENT-DATE:8:36 PM COMMENT-BODY:My idea is to solve the whole problem by just passing legislation that will send all "you people" back where you came from.
(???) -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Anonymous Anonymous COMMENT-DATE:10:44 AM COMMENT-BODY:i completely support gay adoption. there are some studies that suggest that gay adoptive parents are better for older foster care kids than heterosexual parents (not that gay people should only be allowed to adopt older foster care children) when florida tried (or did? crap, i can't remember) to ban gay adoption (which affected more than 400 foster care children) did we see 400 christian-family-value people step up to the plate to take in those children who would not be allowed to be adopted? Noooo! --------
