I'm learning to knit. I got a C in high school art and can't do anything creative with my hands except cook (okay, I'm pretty good at that). But I was looking to learn something new and different, so my neighbor, who is a great knitter, convinced me to check out the classes at a cute little knitting salon (apparently they do exist - who knew?) down the street. It's warm and cozy and there's a little sunny room with comfy couches where people come in with their projects and sit and shoot the shit with people they sort of know all day long. It feels like a bit of a relic except that it's SO good that friendly community spaces like that still exist, whether the excuse is knitting or something else entirely. And people make pretty things that make me feel, for no reason other than alleged-talent-by-proxy, that I, too, can make pretty things! Anyway, I thought I was moving along pretty well with my beginner's hat until I went into the store the other night for another skein (that's what it's called, right?) of yarn and the owner couldn't figure out why I needed another for a winter hat. I think what she actually said, very tactfully, was "Hmmm... that must be an awfully large hat." Nervous, I brought the hat to my neighbor's house that night. She looked at me like this: ... and then started to laugh so hard she had to run into the bathroom so as not to pee herself then and there. It was, in a word, ENORMOUS. It was supposed to start with 80 stitches and by the time she intervened it was ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-FOUR. And then she made me rip the whole. damn. thing. out and start over. Here's the documentation. Trash can cozy? Micro-mini skirt? You decide.

We've all been there. I ripped 2 inches of Little Man's sleeves this morning on the train because I made an amateur error. It was sad. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Johnny COMMENT-DATE:6:18 PM COMMENT-BODY:Why didn't you keep it as a micro-skirt.
